The Nitty-Gritty: Competition Rules & Guidelines

To ensure fair play and a smooth competition for everyone, here’s a breakdown of the essential rules you need to know. Familiarize yourself with these guidelines to avoid any surprises on race day!

General Competition Rules

  • Scrambling: A designated facilitator will scramble each Rubik's Cube using an approved standard method. No peeking!
  • Inspection: Competitors will be given approximately 15 seconds to inspect their scrambled cube. During this time, you can hold the cube with both hands but absolutely no turning of faces.
  • Solving: You'll have a set time limit (usually five minutes) to solve the Rubik's Cube. Each player gets two attempts, with your best time being recorded as the final result.
  • Timing: The clock starts the moment you touch the cube and stops when you lift your hands after completion. A timing device (like a stackmat) ensures accuracy.
  • Scoring: The primary determinant of your ranking is your fastest solve time. In case of a tie, the number of faces completed within the time limit will serve as a tie-breaker (applicable only for individual categories).
  • Equipment: Rubik's Cubes will be provided by INTO E for the competition. While you can use your own cube for practice, you are not allowed to use it during the actual competition.
  • Code of Conduct: All competitors are expected to demonstrate sportsmanship and adhere to the competition's code of conduct. Let's keep it friendly and fair!
  • Judging: Facilitators will oversee the competition, enforce rules, resolve disputes, and ensure fair play. Their decisions are FINAL.

Time Penalties to Watch Out For

Be aware of these infractions that could add precious seconds to your time:

  • +5 seconds: Starting your solve before the official start signal.
  • +5 seconds: Exceeding the allotted time limit for inspection.
  • +8 seconds: Disrupting other competitors during their solves.
  • +8 seconds: Any form of misconduct or cheating.
