A smaller than usual NTUC Supermarket compared to other places, it is located in the basement of Canberra Plaza. Grocery selection is limited, and, from several visits, the fruits and vegetables are also usually not fresh. I'm not sure if this is due in part to supply chain issues stemming from the global coronavirus pandemic.
The cashier snatched the cash as I paid her. Not surprisingly, there was no word of thanks either. As a large and established organisation like NTUC, the leader in employee matters, I think NTUC should invest in training its staff to be helpful and polite. Hopefully, NTUC will not just focus on profit-making, but on giving good service even as it has prospered.
I was standing and waiting in the line that a marked arrow directed for the next cashier. The marked arrow was directing confusedly and made people confused. When it was my turn, the cashier (Ms. Vineela Dasari) stopped me and told me I was coming wrongly from the queue and tried to assist another customer. In fact, I was faster than the customer, thus the customer did not go to the cashier and voluntarily gave way for me before the cashier stopped me. However, the cashier complained to me about my coming. Then, I told her that the marked arrow directed the line to the cashier. Suddenly, she ignored me and did not respond at all. Thus, I asked her to call the manager. Then, she still did not respond, so I kept asking the cashier, "Excuse me," 4 times. Then, she pointed above to the sign which indicated "calling the manager." I was actually very upset due to her impolite attitude (her attempt to ignore me). Finally, when the manager came to me, they promised to change the marked arrow correctly.
Please provide Ms. Vineela Dasari with some coaching sessions to not ignore customer feedback and concerns.
My experience was bad. I couldn't find any of the products I wanted, so I approached a lady in her 40s-50s. I asked her nicely about the product, showing her a picture. She did not know what product it was. I replied that it was a type of biscuit. And she replied, "Oh, I don't know leh. I'm not from the biscuit section." This was said in Chinese. Which was kind of rude to me. Doesn't FairPrice have scanners or computers to check whether a product is available, or do staff usually go to the section and check for us?! All she did was say, "Oh, I don't know leh." I had to search around the store to see if anyone could help, but there wasn't anyone available. I was so disappointed!
After about 10-15 minutes, I found another staff member. She was in her 20s. I didn't see her name clearly, but it was Ms. Lee (____) Lin. Sorry if I sounded rude. Anyway, she helped me with my problem. She went to two sections for two different products. Even though, in the end, she couldn't find it, her approach was vastly different from the older lady's. She also recommended that I go to a bigger store. Please praise her and allow her to serve as an example for other staff members working there, so that customers like me can have a better experience.
We visit a couple times a week, and food prices are good. The only problem is their fruit always seems to be less than fresh. Multiple times, we had to return one or more pieces because the person packing the fruit is always trying to hide one bad or fungus-covered fruit at the bottom or under the tickets/labels. We really wish they would stop trying to sell bad fruit, as we no longer buy from them and recommend always taking the train to Northpoint Cold Storage for your fruit needs. NTUC's vegetables are perfectly acceptable, just not their fruit.
Here's the lightly edited review:
I buy cheap mineral water here. I eat at the canteen and drink the cheap water outside. Drinks in the canteen are overpriced. $1.70 for bottled water. $0.40 from Unfair Pricey. $1.30 can get an apple pie or a McDonald's ice cream.
I would like to complain about a rude staff member named Jessica at NTUC Canberra Plaza. Canberra residents, please be on the lookout for such rude or unacceptable behavior at NTUC Canberra Plaza.
The store was not crowded at all. I bought a drink and a packet of sweets. With just two items, I decided to use the self-checkout machine.
While I was making my way to the self-checkout machine, there was an NTUC staff member, Jessica, standing nearby and just staring blankly.
So I made my way to the machine and started scanning these two items. I was really trying to be self-sufficient and not disturb her, as she seemed unapproachable or unfriendly.
Only then did I realize the machine was for card payment only, and I wanted to make a cash payment. Since she was standing right next to the machine, she saw what happened as I decided to move to a cash payment machine.
I was so shocked to see her reaction. She made an unhappy sound and unhappily took my items. I kept quiet, knowing I had made a mistake.
She continued, making the unhappy sound again, and said in a rude tone, 'Next time, check first before queuing up!' I was stunned by her gesture.
Firstly, she is an ambassador of the self-checkout. She should assist customers in their checkout process, instead of scolding them. She was standing there daydreaming. It wasn't crowded at all, so why scold? I wasn't even jamming up the queue.
Secondly, she should have asked us in the first place if we were paying by cash or card, and directed us to the correct machine, instead of just standing there daydreaming again.
She angrily took my items and handed them over to the manual counter. I was still standing at the self-checkout machine. She came back and ignored me.
She never told or directed me to proceed to the manual counter for payment. I thought I had to go to the cash machine to scan my items.
Really rude and terrible service. If she is tired or unhappy for some reason, please don't work.
She never informed me about my items at the counter until I asked where they were. The manual counter girl had to call out, 'Ma'am, your item is here.'
I went over to the manual counter, proceeded with the payment, and asked the counter girl to redeem my points. She forgot, and I repeated it to her, and then she did. I never scolded her for her mistake, unlike what the aunty just did to me.
Is there a penalty point if she uses her card to void the transaction?
I drop by at least once a week because their selection is pretty okay, meaning most necessities are available. Go earlier in the day if you want the freshest veggies and fruit. The staff at the self-checkout counters are friendly and extremely helpful.
I was annoyed by the same salesperson every time I pay through the self-checkout counters around 2-2:30 PM due to their 'Trust Card' activity. I politely rejected the offer the first few times, but she just pushed on. I know she's just doing her job, but I find her very demanding. For instance, when I told her, "I'm using my dad's NTUC app account, not mine," she went on to say, "You can create your own account." Even after I rejected her the third or fourth time, she still said, "But it's a great deal. Are you sure you don't want it?" Please do something about this, as it is ruining my experience and lowering my impression of this NTUC outlet.
